Really? No seriously, really? Can someone please tell me if anyone would actually spend real money on these shoes. I mean, I’m not a business woman, nor am I a woman marine biologist, nor am I the female head of a fortune 500 company that specializes in brokering million dollar deals with the lost city of Atlantis, so I’m really out of my element here. But really, would anybody really ever buy these shoes? REALLY?

Nerds Unite!
It’s the one time in the year that nerds from all across the galaxy can get together and rejoice in their collective quirks and oddities. It was cool to see Adam West and Julie Newmar there. Also in attendance, “Face” from the A-Team (ironic since I didn’t actually recognize him), a rag-tag team of veteran pro rasslers and the giant (I think technically he is a giant) who played Chewbacca in the Star Wars movies. We rode the elevator with him before knowing exactly who he was and he let us ride on his shoulders for three whole floors. Three things I learned at the Central Canada Comic Con this year: 1 - It is actually a great event where looking or acting weird or out of place is an impossibility; 2 - nerds give off a wondrous melange of odours; and 3 - if you call a “nerd” a “geek” he/she will unleash a wrath upon thee not unlike that which Gandolf unleashed upon the Balrog (or some such n’ such). Purchased at the Central Canada Comic Con - Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes, Digest #44 among other similar books. Normally they would have cost $0.25 at any garage sale but I got three for a cool 5 bucks at Comic Con. Sometimes, you just have to take one for the nerds, I mean team.
Robert Polidori
While I’m not really familiar with his work, I was struck by his evocative photos while flipping through one of our library’s hidden gems, Image Makers, Image Takers. The book focuses on the motivations and inspirations of some of the world’s most established photographers. Mr. Polidori’s mournful photos of Chernobyl struck a cord, however it was his take on the beautifully haunted city of Havana that really caught my eye.

Nonsensical Infographics
As if the title wasn’t confusing enough, try to actually make sense of these graphs. Personally, I haven’t much to say (for once) about these, other than the fact that I really enjoy the primary colours and shapes. See more here
Solving a Sizeable Dilema
Thickness. Length. Thickness. Length. This debate has raged on for generations. Through an independent study created and executed by Neuhaus Design, we have determined conclusively* that women indeed prefer a nice, big, thick head of hair over the alternative. We’ve published our findings by way of an outdoor, print and radio campaign for the good folks at the Sheps Hair Transplant Clinic.
* results may be inconclusive.

With Glowing Hearts
The designs for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic medals have been released. The medals have deviated from the traditional flat orientation to a wave-like formation, “representing waves, mountains and drifting snow found throughout Canada.” Each medal is unique in that it features a different crop of an orca (Olympic) or raven (Paralympic) rendered in a Haida style. Having recently (2007) been to Vancouver, I have a new appreciation for this artform. I was fortunate to spend a few hours in the Museum of Anthropology on the campus of the University of British Columbia and I was blown away by the totem poles, wood carvings and highly detailed paintings on the fronts of Haida houses. If you’re ever in Vancouver, it’s worth the visit. In the meantime, let us know what you think of the new medals.
