Typexcitement

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

I’ve been really excited about type this year. As my fiance and I move closer towards designing our wedding stationery, I’ve got my peepers open for any and all inspiring type. I’m happy to report that Jessica Hische has posted the initial for our soon-to-be-shared new last name, the letter T! If you haven’t visited Daily Drop Cap, where “each day (or at least each WORK day), a new hand-crafted decorative initial cap will be posted for your enjoyment and for the beautification of blog posts everywhere”, then you should do so immediately. While you’re at it, check out Woodtyper for more type-goodness.

King of Comics

Monday, January 4th, 2010

Well, here we are, officially back with our nose to the grindstone(s). It was a great break, and we’re looking forward to the many exciting changes about to take place here at Neuhaus Design. We can’t let you into our inner circle just yet, but stay tuned for more details. In the meantime, check out this great book I received for Christmas! If you’re at all familiar with comic books then you’ll immediately recognize the name Jack Kirby. His most notable contributions to comic books include the co-creation of Captain America with Joe Simon in the 1940’s, the many Marvel co-creations with Stan Lee in the 1960’s including the Fantastic Four, X-Men, the Silver Surfer as well as his own universe, Jack Kirby’s Fourth World in the early 1970’s. The man absolutely defined the word prolific, as he was known as the fastest, most dynamic artist of his time (and any since). And even though I grew up on a whole different generation of artists such as Dan Jurgens and Graham Nolan, they all owe some part of their style and approach to Kirby. The book, written by Mark Evanier, contains the condensed biography of Jack Kirby and includes many, many illustrations spanning his career beginning in the 1940’s right through to his death in 1994. Pick it up, you won’t regret it.

All Wrapped Up

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

Neuhaus has Christmas all wrapped up. For a gift this year for most of our clients, we decided to do something a little different and created a ‘Christmas Gift Wrap Survival Kit’. After a seemingly never ending amount of design, bow tying, folding and assembly, all 50 packages are now off. Included in this neatly packaged present are 3 large sheets of screen printed wrapping paper, 1 pair of scissors, 1 tape dispenser, 2 spools of ribbon, 6 gift tags and 1 re-useable gift box. There were a few clients, however, who we adorned with delicious chocolates instead. Why you ask? Our fingers started cramping from all the bow tying. Ok, Ashley’s fingers started cramping. And we couldn’t ask her to tie another bow for fear of a lawsuit. Thanks to Ashley for all her hard work. (please don’t sue the company.)

The best part of this whole gift? The metallic gold wrapping paper! Many thanks to Paul of Modern Man Screen Printing for the help with this project.

Jen Stark

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

It’s always awe-inspiring when you find a piece of art that is so simple but completely complicated at the same time. Jen Stark is a young artist who’s career began when she attended an art program in France and had a limited amount of money to buy art supplies. She saw potential with a stack of brightly coloured construction paper and an exacto knife, and the rest is history. Hear more about her story here and see more of her sculptures on her website.

Glorious Detail from Don Shanks

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Although I was unfamiliar with Don Shank’s art, I immediately sat up when I realized he was responsible for the design of Carl Fredericksen’s house from the movie UP! I love the attention to detail in the sketches and thoughts he provides, giving us a look at his mind in action. Bookmark his blog if you like sweet, sweet illustration.

1 Down, 4 To Go

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

Wall Art that is. We’ve been steadily chipping away at getting our artwork up on the walls. It’s been many weeks, but if you knew how long it took us to get paint on the walls (hint: almost a decade) the rate of progress in comparison has been off the charts! For my own personal piece, I decided it was high time I cozied up with goache and my ruling pen again. Several hours of painting and ruling later, I was happy with the outcome, and even happier I’m not still in first year Graphic Design. Check it out below, and keep your eyes peeled for more artwork in the coming week.

Retro UP Posters

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

If you haven’t seen Disney/Pixar’s UP yet, please do. To promote my admiration of this film, I thought I’d post a couple retro posters I chanced upon on while cruising the world wide web.

Stephen Wiltshire

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

This person is absolutely astounding. Diagnosed as a young child as autistic, Stephen has since formed the ability to illustrate detailed cityscapes. What makes this particular talent even more impressive is that he does so from memory, having only observed them briefly. If you want to be truly inspired, please head over to his website and view his story.
