Colour Me Wonderful

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

“Colour is infinite, you can always split the difference between 2 colours.” And with that statement Pantone throws 566 new colours into the mix with their new Pantone Plus Matching System. If only we had Pantone’s 28 spot colour press at our disposal, and if only our clients had the budget to print 28 spot colours. Until then, we’ll have to settle for more modest 2 or 3 spot colour jobs or hope that printers can match these wonderful new hues via CMYK processes, but I won’t hold my breath. My favourite line from a print rep: “Ooooooh, gee, i don’t know… hmm, orange (or purple, or black, or ‘insert colour here’) is a really difficult colour to match.”. I’m of the opinion that more colour=more awesome but printers may not agree.

Match Made in Heaven

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

First of all, I love all things vintage. Vintage packaging, however, is my absolute achilles heel. I find it rather serendipitous that I stumbled onto a fantastic collection of vintage European matchbooks this morning a few months in advance of our journey to Europe this fall. My fiance and I are already small time collectors of matchbooks (among other things) and I find myself constantly amazed at the simple solutions artists and designers alike are able to fit on such a small amount of real estate. Truly graphic design in its purest form. If you like matchbooks, here’s a little video by Navigators I found sometime late last week which fits nicely into the “match” theme.

The Past is Present

Friday, April 9th, 2010

I came across these posters from the 1972 Olympics in Munich and couldn’t help but notice the resemblance to the Vancouver 2010 artwork. It’s nice to see that retro graphics are still relevant today.

Portfolio Updates

Monday, December 7th, 2009

We’re working on updating the portfolio section of our website with the latest and greatest projects we’ve been creating. Check back soon to see all the new work. Until then, here’s a little taste of things to come. Oh, and just a tid-bit of useless information (because I know you were all wondering), there was only one printer in town who would even attempt to do a die-cut spinning wheel without a rivet (it’s magical, I know).

100th Post!

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

99 posts. 99 good times.

Our subjects have been varied; rants & raves, tributes to our favourite designers, sharing a laugh… We’re still new to the blogosphere, but we’re showing no signs of slowing down. In honour of our 100th post we present: Bibliographic: 100 Classic Graphic Design Books.

Now go grab a pen and put it on your Christmas list. You know you want to.

Graphic Simplicity

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

I FFFFound these posters earlier today, and I must say, I wish they were mine. I’m a huge fan of absolute simplicity, and these posters embody simplicity. While I think some of the posters work better than others, the overall execution and colour selection are excellent. Check out the collection at Exergian.

Graphic Design With Simon Page

Monday, November 9th, 2009

I find myself gravitating more and more towards artwork such as that produced by Simon Page, and it is starting to influence my own work. I am currently enjoying experimenting with liberal use of colour and simplistic shapes with complex arrangements. If you find yourself gravitating in the same direction, check out his blog for more inspirational graphic design.
